Macario is a Mexican film directed by Roberto Gavaldón, released in 1960. It is based on a short story by the author B. Traven. The film deals with themes of poverty, hunger, greed, and the supernatural. The story follows Macario, a poor peasant, who encounters Death one day and is given the gift of a turkey, which he is told will give him three wishes. Macario uses his wishes to make himself rich, but soon realizes that wealth brings him nothing but misery. The film was highly acclaimed for its cinematography, production design, and performances. It won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 1961 and was also nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
